WNCP Curriculum and Mathematics Proficiencies

At the Whitehorse (85th) BCcupms meeting, Jim Bailey presented a study comparing the proposed content of the WNCP Mathematics curriculum for BC/Yukon with the mathematics proficiencies expected by post-secondary mathematics/statistics instructors in college and university.  The the slides accompanying Jim's presentation are available HERE.  As a convenience, the Mathematics Proficiencies study is also available.

Math for Elementary Education (MFEE)

At the Professional Development Session on Thursday, May 17, at the 2007 meeting of the BCcupms, the MFEE Core Curriculum Subcommittee was struck.

Visit the BCcupms MFEE web site to see the members, mandate, and meeting schedule of this subcommittee, as well as links to relevant documents.

Placement Tests for Calculus I (Survey Results))

David Leeming of the University of Victoria, this report is a summary of the results of a survey of BC's post-secondary educational institutions on their use of Placement Tests for Calculus I.   If relevant information from your post-secondary institution was not reported, please contact David Leeming providing the questionnaire responses appropriate to your situation.

First-Year Core Calculus

The First-Year Core Calculus Report to the BCcupm was unanimously approved (all recommendations) at the May 2002 Meeting of the BCcupm.  This Report was prepared by a team representing various sectors of the post-secondary mathematics education community in BC and the initiative was supported by BCCAT under a Transfer Innovations Project grant.

First-Year Core Calculus Follow-up Survey Report to the BCcupm

This report tabled in May 2003 summarized the experiences of the post-secondary mathematics education community with the Core Calculus Curricula one year after their adoption.  For a printable copy of the Follow-up Report, click HERE.

Mathematics Flexible Pre-Major

Some colleges striving to provide for their students a variety of courses sufficient to allow entry into the third year of a Mathematics Major program at university urged that a study of program requirements for a Math Major and of the status of present offerings at BC colleges be undertaken.

In this regard, the Mathematics Flexible Pre-Major Analysis Project Report gives an insight into the challenges and opportunities for students, colleges and universities.  It also suggests a set of first-and second-year courses that should form the core of a Math Pre-Major program.  The BCcupms approved the Recommendations of the Report in May 2006.

For a printable copy of the Final Report, click HERE.

At its May 2008 meeting, the BCcupms endorsed an updated version of the course details for the Mathematics Flexible Pre-Major. The report containing this updated information can be obtained HERE (PDF).

Need some dynamic resources for your math/stats course?

Web-based Resources for College Mathematics and Statistics

At its May 1999 Meeting the BCcupm initiated a project to identify suitable web-based learning materials on a more detailed basis than are available in most existing resource guides.  It is hoped that this project, chaired by Alan Cooper at Langara College, will enable students quickly to find reliable materials in support of their immediate learning objectives, and that it may also provide an effective medium for faculty to distribute the new mathematics/statistics resources that they create.

What do you REALLY need to know in order to succeed in first-year math/stats?

Mathematics Proficiencies - For Post-Secondary Mathematics/Statistics Courses (Report)

In 1999, the Centre for Curriculum Transfer and Technology in BC completed a project to review the general and specific mathematics proficiencies recommended by BC's post-secondary educational institutions for entry to selected mathematics/statistics courses.   The courses selected for this study were Calculus, Introductory Statistics and Mathematics for Elementary Education.  The Report details some very interesting findings and details the recommendations of the Project's Steering Committee.  To down-load the Report, you'll need a pdf reader.

The Provincial Calculus 12 course.

The IRP for the BC Calculus 12 course is now available.  Pierre Gilbert, Manager of the Content and Achievement Branch for the Ministry of Education, chaired the development team and welcomes your comments and input.
